Rachel C. Gardner Wildlife Sanctuary



The Rachel C. Gardner Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the corner of Route 1 and Latimer Point Road in the Town of Stonington. It's a 5.4- acre parcel with approximately 800-feet of saltwater frontage on Wilcox Cove.

The land was generously donated to the Land Trust by Peter Gardner, on March 1, 2019, in memory of Peter and Carol's daughter, Rachel, who among other things, enjoyed many outdoor activities.

This scenic property is a mix of salt marsh and coastal upland, which provides both cover and rich feeding areas for wading birds, waterfowl and woodland species.

It's a great spot for birding! Sightings have included Great Egrets to woodland species, as well as Night-Herons, Ospreys and a diverse variety of waterfowl.

The Stonington Land Trust is most appreciative to be the recipient of this special property, the Rachel C. Gardner Wildlife Sanctuary!

Please keep in mind when visiting this Wildlife Sanctuary:

 

  •  Open to the public dawn to dusk

  •  No pets on this Wildlife Sanctuary

  •  No hunting or trapping

  •  No smoking, alcohol or campfires

  •  No motorized vehicles or bicycles

  •  Please do not disturb the plant or animal life
